The importance of being Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa rose quick to stardom and became one of the POP main IT girls. It was unexpected for many reasons. And as it usually happens in US, at first any international act is welcomed with open arms as something that the music market in US does need front time to time, but is not expected to “stay” longer after that 6 months tourist visa expires. Because, for many international artists, a musical career in US is just that, a quick le voila, house tour and gtfo. Then it happened, Dua became crazy successful, sold out tours, won Grammies, adapted the American way of business, had clothing lines, advertisements, movies, worked around the clock, world wide tours while adding that European artsy vibe - I read, I speak many languages, I’m smart, I’m on vacation, I’m gorgeous and it was fun until it became a threat. She extended “her visa” and she was here to stay. Which is fine, she deserves all of it, but it is unusual for American music market, to have an international Pop girl running things. Don’t believe me? OK, tell me the last Pop girl worldwide famous who wasn’t American. I’ll wait. Exactly! You might say Adele, and while crazy famous she ain’t a Pop Girl. A Pop Girl, is someone who sings, dances, influences, does movies, fashion, is the center of the party, all that etc etc. Gaga, Beyonce, Ariana, Katy, Rihanna etc are Pop IT girls. But, even if you say Adele, remind you, she found the perfect formula and disappears every five years as  to not “get in trouble” lol. She “came” early the last time and her last album flopped* lol. Do not come! Do not come! Lol

Right before putting out the last album “Radical Optimism” I could see  the comments and even “influencers” on Instagram leaving Dua out of their stories. Same people who praised her previous album. It was weird. Then the “fans” claiming that the new album will be a flop, before the album even came out. Then the album came out and it was really good. And the excuse was “it has the same sound”. It’s her fucking sound, (excuse her for not riding that country dick tf), or as a Chicago newspaper put it “ Had anyone else released this album, I would probably have regarded it more positively. But Dua Lipa has proved that she can innovate and truly change the trajectory of pop music and “Radical Optimism” doesn’t showcase her full potential.” TF that means? So, you liked the album but because is Dua Lipa you not gonna, with the pretense of expecting Mozart? Is it a good album or not? That’s the question. Hold your feelings, readers are not your therapist lol.

Then Grammy’s nominations came out yesterday and totally ignored her album. If that doesn’t prove my point tf will? They did ignore it, because as I have posted before “The New Pop Girls” are in town, and all the American ones made the nominations list. DUH! Also Dua didn’t thank Beyonce the last time so hahahahahaha. My bad!

And before you say Charlie XCX, don’t. Is just the flavor of the season. Charlie has been around forever, and couldn’t even sell out shows. Not because she doesn’t have great music (love her since forever), but because they just don’t want to. Let’s not.

Dua honey, you’re doing great. The whole point of this is that you’re a threat. Not to the Pop Girls, but to the industry. If they allow one international artist to “sit with them” then while fun at first, it opens doors for other international artist to dream* and join the clique. And even though that’s just fine, because money still rolls in the US, they’re worried because after K-POP adapting BoyBand techniques and developing their own thing, labels are afraid that’s what would happen with Pop Girls industry as well. We all know, those are some of the most profitable names in the music industry worldwide, and not just music. That doesn’t just complicate thinks, it gets them out of their hands. Everybody is for globalization until they’re not the ones profiting of it. That’s why Dua is a “threat” to US market, but important to the rest of the world. Coming with a can do attitude, cigarette in one hand, books on the other, open about her dating life, working her ass off and vacationing, she’s reshaping the definition of the cool girl. Like it or not she ain’t going anywhere and she’s more interesting in a 20 pics drop than your whole favorite's IG feed. Her next album, might not have 11 Grammy nominations but it will be unavoidable. Hit it bish!
